ὁ, [full] ἡ, τό, is, when thus written,A demonstr. Pronoun.B in [dialect] Att., definite or prepositive Article.C in [dialect] Ep., the so-called postpositive Article, = relative Pronoun, ὅς, ἥ, ὅ.—The nom. masc. and fem. sg. and pl., ὁ, ἡ, οἱ, αἱ, have no accent in codd. and most printed books, exc. when used as the relative ; but ὁ, ἡ, οἱ, αἱ differ only in writing from ὃ, ἣ, οἳ, αἳ ; the nom. forms of the article are said by Hdn.Gr.1.474 to be oxytone, and by A.D.Pron.8.7 not to be enclitic. The forms τῶν, τοῖς, ταῖς were barytone (i. e. τὼν, τοὶς, ταὶς ) in [dialect] Aeol. acc. to Aristarch. ap. A.D.Synt.51.26. For οἱ, αἱ some dialects (not Cypr., cf. Stob. 4, 7, 64) `stain, soil' (E., Arist., Ph.), κηλιδωτός (Suid., Gloss.). - Besides κηλάς, - άδος f. adjunct of the stormclouds (Thphr.), after H. also = χειμερινη ἡμέρα and αἴξ, ἥτις κατὰ τὸ μέτωπον σημεῖον ἔχει τυλοειδές, so prop. `spotted, sparkled'; also κηλήνη μέλαινα H.Etymology: Formation as κληΐς, κνημίς a. o. (Schwyzer 465, Chantraine Formation 346f.), like these from a noun. Whether κηλάς, κηλήνη go back on this noun is uncertain, as we must reckom with suffix-change and backformation. - An unknown word is the basis of an Italic adjective with comparable meaning Lat. cālidus `with a bless on the head' = Umbr. ( buf) kaleřuf `boves calidos' (like candidus, nitidus). To the same semantic sphere also Lith. kalýbas, -ývas `white-necked, of dogs' (with short vowel); further OIr. caile `stain' (IE. *kali̯o-). Semantically further off is Lat. cālīgō `fog, darkness', which Ernout-Meillet keep away. (Away remain Skt. kāla- `(blue)black', kalmaṣa- `spot, soil' (prob. LW [loanword], s. Mayrhofer KEWA s. vv.). , cf. ὅδε III. 2: freq., however, where there are not two things, οὗτος refers to what follows, Il. 13.377, Od.2.306, etc.; οὔκουν.. τοῦτο γιγνώσκεις, ὅτι .. ; A.Pr. 379, etc.3 οὗτος is used emphat., generally in contempt, while ἐκεῖνος denotes praise, ὁ πάντ' ἄναλκις οὗτος, i.e. Aegisthus, S.El. 301;τούτους τοὺς συκοφάντας Pl.Cri. 45a
; so D.de Coron. uses οὗτος of Aeschines, ἐκεῖνος of Philip; but οὗτος is used of Philip, D.2.15, 4.3.b of what is familiar, τούτους τοὺς πολυτελεῖς χιτῶνας, of the Persians, X.An.1.5.8;οἱ τὰς τελετὰς.. οὗτοι καταστήσαντες Pl.Phd. 69c

11 στίζω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to stitch, to tattoo, to brand' (IA.).Derivatives: 1. στίγ-μα n. `stitch, mark, brand' (Hes. Sc. 166, IA.), also = δίγαμμα (Ϝ) as cipher for 6 (attempt at explanation by Pisani Ist. Lomb. 73: 2,53) with - ματίας m. `branded one' (IA.). 2. ( ἐπι-, δια-) στιγ-μή f. `mar, spot, point, tittle' (IA.) with - μιαῖος `including just one point, without extension' (hell. a. late); - μός m. `stitch, brand' (A. in lyr.). 3. στίξις ( διά- στίζω) f. `the stitching' (late). 4. στιγ-εύς m. `stitcher, brander' (Hdt.), `brand-iron' (Suid.), prob. directly from verb (after Bosshardt 54 from *στιγή); thus 5. - ων, - ωνος m. `branded one' (Ar. Fr. 97). 6. - ος (- ον) m. (n.) `point' (Archim.). 7. στίκ-της m. `stitcher, brander' (Herod.). 8. - τός ( κατά- στίζω) 'spotted, variegated' (trag., Arist. etc.). 9. As 2. member περιστιγής `variegated' (Nic.).Etymology: The regularly built Greek system is based on a not further identifiable IE basis. Nearest is the Germ. word for `stich' in Goth. stiks, OHG stih, OS stiki, OE stice, PGm. * stik-i- m. with i-enlargement from IE * stig- in στίζω (from *στίγ-ι̯ω), στίξαι. Beside it in Latin partly a nasalpresent in in-, di-stinguō (-u- secondary) `incite' resp. `(stitch apart' \>) `separate, distinguish', partly a secondary formation in in-stĩgō. - āre `incite' (from * steig-). Oldindian gives several cognates, all without initial s-; the primary forms are however rare. Note the full grade present téjate `be sharp' (IE * teigetoi) with verbal adj. tik-ta- (: στικτός; ní-tikta-'instigatus'), tig-má- `pointed, sharp' (: στιγ-μή). -- Further forms from several languages, not interesting for Greek, in Bq s. v., WP. 2, 612ff., Pok. 1016f., W.-Hofmann s. instīgō w. rich lit. By στίζω another old verb for `sting' was replaced, of which however representatives are maintained in πικρός, ποικίλος (s. vv.).Page in Frisk: 2,797-798Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > στίζω

18 μώλωψ
μώλωψ, - ωποςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `stripe, wale, weal, bruise' (Hyp., Arist., LXX, medic.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Formation like 1. μύ-ωψ, ὕδρ-ωψ a.o. (Schwyzer 426 n. 4), so prob. with as first member a noun, which however has no certain connection. Semantically, and also formally close is Lith. mėl-ymė, -ynė `blue spot, blue stain, stripe', form mėlas `blue', wiht ablaut ē: ō (cf. Lith. mólis `loam'); here further μέλας, μολύνω (s. vv.) a.o. (Bq, Persson Beitr. 2, 674, WP. 2, 293, Pok. 720f., Fraenkel Wb. s. mėlas). -- Diff, certainly not better, Zupitza KZ 37, 398 and Solmsen IF 13, 137: from *μώσλωψ to Germ., e.g. OHG māsa `stain in the skin, scar, wound' (WP. 2, 300, Vasmer Wb. s. mozólь). By-forms ῥαθμίζεσθαι ῥαίνεσθαι; ῥαθαί-νεται ῥαίνεται, βρέχεται H.; ῥαθασσόμενοι ῥαινόμενοι H., Phot.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Popular formation in - ιγξ like λάϊγγες, στροφάλιγξ, πύλιγγες (s.v.) a.o. (Chantraine Form. 398ff., Schwyzer 498); further analysis unknown. As basis could have functioned a noun *ῥαθαμός ( οὑλαμός, ποταμός a.o.); beside it apparently *ῥαθμός in ῥαθμίζεσθαι (prob. through syncope, a is often found in Pre-Greek). As βαθμός: βαίνω also *ῥαθμός: ῥαίνω? Through crosses or enlargements ῥα-θαίνω (: ῥαίνω), ῥαθάσσω (: σταλάσσω). Further s. ῥαίνω. -- Diff. Bechtel Lex. s.v.
